19TH - CENTURY ENGLISH LITERATURE
Students will investigate a range of poems, plays, novels, and expository prose from the Romantic Period, and the Victorian Age. The course focuses on Romanticism, and Victorianism. The prominent romantic poets and essayists and their Victorian counterparts are to be studied at length. Selections from the novels and plays of the period may be chosen to illustrate the generic and thematic richness of this important period. The focus will be on the canon of British verse, drama and fiction covering the target period. Students will be exposed to a variety of literary forms, patterns and techniques from the Romantic and Victorian periods mainly the ballad, ballade, blank verse, free verse, elegy, eulogy, lyric, narrative poetry, ode, parody, and pastoral poetry.
